Kalamazoo College invites applications for a two-year appointment as Visiting Assistant Professor in Japanese language and Japanese studies beginning late August 2023. The area of specialization is open. We are especially interested in applicants who can contribute premodern literature, environmental studies, or religion focused classes to our growing East Asian Studies program. The successful candidate will join a program comprised of specialists in Japanese language, literature, sociolinguistics, Asian history, Chinese language and culture. The salary is competitive and consistent with level of experience. The teaching expectation is six courses per year (2-2-2, in three terms), including Japanese language courses, ranging from beginning to advanced, and culture courses taught in English. The successful candidate will contribute to the depth and breadth of the East Asian Studies program, as well as the College’s “Shared Passages” core curriculum.
A Ph.D. is required, as well as native or near-native abilities in both Japanese and English. All but the dissertation (ABD) will be considered. The successful candidate must demonstrate a high aptitude for and interest in undergraduate teaching, a commitment to the liberal arts, a promise of scholarly excellence, and a desire to involve undergraduates in scholarship both inside and outside the classroom.
